Well, this has not been all that costly...

Source the parts from used trucks, these both came off used applications...

Rest is my own or my friends fabrication...

The smaller one is a HX40W, and the bigger one is a HX60 w/ 32cm2 exhaust housing...

With a 4k GSK, these two work very well together... you should go to some Cummins dealers and see if they have parts or even whole turbos laying around that are heading for the scrap bin....

Putting a turbo together is no rocket science, you simply get the rebuild manuals off the Cummins.com or Holset.co.uk website and start from there...

They scrap and throw away hundreds of these turbos every day, although less than 70% of them are totaled...

You make it sound soooo easy. You've certainly come a long way in a short time. I admire your ability to stay focused and kick the gremlins out of the way.

Truck is RUNNING !!!

Timing seems to be too low ?

It will not build revs over 1200rpm and sputters white smoke, what could be the issue ???

when it gets hot it will build revs to 2100rpm and then sputter white smoke now...

i had to put more diesel in it because it obviously had more gas in the tank than i thought....

can it be that it sputters white smoke because it's not getting boost ? i've yet to connect the HX40 to the intercooler...

Yes, timing slipped.... here's a quote from my post in the Diesel in Distress forum...

looks like it slipped when i was tightening it or something...

am i correct to assume that i will set timing by sticking the pin in... this is 13,5°?

then the crankshaft pulley measures 740mm, divided by 360°... 2mm travel on the crankshaft pulley must be 1° so to advance timing by 7" i will turn the engine counter-clockwise by 14mm ?

Or do i turn the engine clockwise ???

Thanks in advance you guys...

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

I measured set timing the same way i had intended on advancing timing...

Timing had slipped and was somehow set @ 34° pre-TDC

So here's a write-up on how to set timing:

#1 - Turn over the motor with a crank bar with the timing hole on the pump open until you see the timing marker, insert the timing lock pin.

#2 - Loosen the nut on the pump, it would be a good idea to have someone hold the crankshaft still so that you won't break the lock pin, then give it a bump with a hammer on each side until the gear pops off the axle.

If you already have your TDC in order, you will not have to do step #3..

#3 - pull out your #1 injector and stick a long screwdriver in there so that you can see it move up and down, mark on your crankshaft pulley (i used the crankshaft sensor to mark by) when the screwdriver stars to move down, both when you turn it clockwise and counterclockwise, on my engine the TDC duration measured 38,5mm this is equvaliant to 19.25° variant in time, so you have to mark the center of this zone on your pulley... that is 19,25mm (on my engine, again this may differ on yours) from each mark you've already put there...

#4 now you have TDC... and with your lock pin in place on your pump you will have 13,5° timing... you can now advance or retard timing by turning your motor counter-clockwise (to advance) or clockwise (to retard) by 2mm (giving that your crankshaft pulley is 740mm round like mine) for each 1° you want to adjust..

This way is both easy and not as time consuming as using a clock and needle...

It took me less than 40 minutes to set timing on my truck and now it no longer smokes white or pops...

I lost one freeze-plug though, i'm unsure why though because they're new... my guess is that they were not the correct size since they were GM freeze-plugs...

I will definately order new plugs after the weekend and this time i'm going genuine Cummins parts..

Gotcha, well glad you got it figured out!
How much did you advance the timing?
Has she moved around any?

I've been driving it around a bit, it's running good, but i had to block off my HX40 as it was making a grinding noise and i'm getting a replacement tomorrow...

I think i'm almost past all the dits and dings that come with a big project like this...
