I got rid of my drone!
I bought this truck last year and like I did with my last diesel, I cut off the muffler the day after I bought it. The sound was awesome but while towing heavy up hill the drone was out of control! I didn't want to kill that big rig sound, and I certainly didn't want to add backpressure and kill boost. The best way I thought I could get these goals accomplished without breaking the bank were as follows:
The outer case is 6" aluminized exhaust tubing, the inner perforated core is 4" with 37 percent open area, the end caps are 3/16" steel which I cut out with my plasma cutter.
I weld it all together with my 220 mig using argon/co2 mix. The penetration is awesome!
Given the dimensions, there is 1 inch of 1200 degree packing around the core, this keeps the big rig sound while killing the drone.
As you can see, the entire thing is completely hand built. Overall length is 15". The tubes are swedged open so they can slip over the existing 4" exhaust tubing.
Sorry GM I just stole your exit location! HAHA. The 90 degree bend that most exhaust systems have as the exit location is a huge source of resonance, this exit eliminates that, and keeps the flow!
I also wanted to put the muffler back as far as possible and have some tubing after it. This exit location also puts the sound of the exhaust as far back on the truck as possible.
I wasn't looking for anything fancy for a tip. This is just my tow truck/daily driver, I was goin for clean and simple.
