Default Tranny Questions...

Hey Bombers!
I know this is a Diesel forum, which I own 4 of; 2 F250's, 1 Suburban, and 1 Oliver Tractor, but I have a non-diesel question. I just feel awkward going anywhere else after finding Diesel Bombers, so pardon this question...

Here we go...

I have a 94' F150 300 6cyl., 4.9L pickup that has a bad tranny. The tranny apparently is an E40D 4WD. My question is what year ranges can I pull off a compatible tranny from? Can I only pull from 6cyl. motors, or will a tranny from a V8 ford engine (diesel and gas?) work as well (providing they are 4WD)?

Is there a website I can search for this information?

Basically, I need to know what years and types of engines I can pull a compatible tranny from?

I appreciate the help,

DannZegos

Default A Big Thanks!

Once again Logan you have answered my questions. You are like the swiss knife of truck knowledge. I do appreciate the help!!!

Allow me to put your truck knowledge prowess to work once more...

I do have a nice 302 chromed out motor sitting around... Is there any advantage to a 302 V8 over a 300 6cyl.? My main purpose for this truck is pulling light loads in the winter, and getting back to the woods to cut firewood.

Thanks,

DannZegos

300 has the low end torque but will run out of top end quickly, they 302 isnt a stump puller down low but will have the upper RPM to keep the tires spinning......what size tires you running and what axles gears you got (most likely 3.55's)....is the 302 all stock or anything done to it......

Default 302 modified

The 302 has been bored out, with a 4 barrel Edelbrock. Without walking back to the field where it sits with a bad tranny, I would say 15's. They are small squaty but wide mud tires. I really couldn't tell you on the rear end though...

With what you described though, with pulling I would need more low end torque, so perhaps the right engine is in there already?

Thanks,

DannZegos

If it's a light load the v8 will do just fine especially at highway speeds, if its a slow heavy pull you'll definatley want that L6 I've got a 2wd one with a five speed If I had the suspension and tires I could get about any load rolling just might take a while to get to speed

i would go with the 302 since its got a 4 barrel and bored out, sounds like she might be a little thumper and will really turn the tires in the mud......

I happen to like the 300. You can get quite a bit out of it if the vehicle is right, plus mileage and easy starting. That year engine has quite a bit to it in stock form, with some coaxing in the breathing department (in and out) and a good tuneup you could really have something there.
