Question Thinking of getting a 3500 Chevy.

My dad has a friend he told me about that is selling a Chevy 3500 crew cab 90's model dually. It has a 6.5 detroit diesel. I know a little bit about diesels but not much. I drive a 99 2 door Tahoe right now with the 5.7 vortec in it and I get about 12 miles per gallon. I am wondering if it would be a smart buy because I can barely afford to pay for gas right now. Basically all I'm wondering is the kind of fuel milage the 3500 chevy's get and how much more they are to keep up than my hoe. Right now parts for my car are average, and I know it's a little more money to keep diesels up. I am just wondering if it would be a smart buy because I love the looks of the trucks, and would like to know if they are as reliable as my Tahoe has been. Thanks!

6 tires instead of 4.. that's a huge expense.

most of the parts (non engine related) are pretty much the same, the diesel will cost a bit more to maintain but at greater intervals, as for economy i couldn't really say.

Yea depending on the brand it could 600 dollars or more. I love diesels, I just don't want to replace my Tahoe right now with someone that gets the same milage or worse.

That is what I was thinking, but I don't tow anything as of now, but it's always good to have the option.

I drive an 87 Crew Cab dually ford f350 with cummins diesel conversion. I miss my tahoe but like you have a preference for the trucks. what better fuel econemy you get with the diesel may be offset with the more expensive diesel fuel. Plus a dually is harder to park. Also a dually will provide a stiffer suspension. The nice thing about early 90's chevy trucks(not sure about the motor) but the truck parts are a dime a dozen for the most part. Do keep in mind this truck is about 3 feet longer (estimate while parked next to my co-workers tahoe) than your tahoe. If it is your only vehicle as it sounds I would ponder it a little more.

Thanks for all the help. I think I believe I've made my mind up. I'll wait it out until I can get a 2500 like I really want.
