Default 12 valve Cummins

what makes the 12 valve the prefered motor? i am looking into 99-02 dodges because i like the older body style. is it worth it to go a little older for the 12v?

P pump first and foremost and they're easier to diagnose because they don't have all the electronics of the 24 valve. Both are good trucks though.

and what about the newer 5.9's, up to '06, still a great motor? what about the Dodge truckas a whole, any year better than the others? i have lots of questions about the Dodge because i was brought up a Ford guy and all i've heard growing up is bias opinions about the other manufacturers.

Honestly, every engine had their own unique problems. They all have their things! 12Vs are arguably the most reliable, but the issues with the 24V, and CR engines are easily corrected these days, so buy what you like!

Yea well there's a reason some guys put thier Cummins into a Ford, I personally feel they all have thier strong and weak points.

I have had all of the dodge body styles along with the different cummins except for the 1st gen.

Most powerful and easiest to get that power was my 06 5.9

Best on fuel was the 2000 5.9, I really miss this truck good power great fuel mileage. If you buy one put a new lift pump on and a fuel pressure gauge, no big deal.

Best interier and ride was the 4th gen trucks. But the emission equipment suck!!

Best sound is the 12 valve

yeah it was in '94 when the Dodge caught my eyes and ears, GREAT SOUND!! but i didnt want to buy a 14+ year old truck to get the 12v. i will most likely get one up to 2002, i loved that body style

Lots of ppl tell me my sig truck is the best sounding cummins they've heard... personally as far as sound for me i pick 1st gen, then 24v, then p-pump.. just my opinion.. i will argue the ride quality too.. i have a 2/4 ton SRW with leather power heated and pressure adjustable seats (not sure on proper terminology) and it feels almost as good as a chevy.. VP 24v gets my vote..

and what about the 6.7? i was going to stay with the tested 5.9 just from what i read. most people seem to agree that the 5.9 is the better motor

You just can't beat a 12v.

It's what invented the KISS saying.
