Dirtymaxes are 300K engines my friend, I have yet to see one get past 250K where I live Ive seen plenty of strokers at the 300K mark and yet to see a DMAX get there alive. Id keep the stroker and leave the DMAX if you thought a ps was a pain in the a$$ to work on wait for a Dmax. Dmaxes pickup and go but if you tow there a horrible choice and I know some Dmax lover gonna get on here and cry at me and tell me differnt. GOOD FOR THEM!!! I hate em, POS japanese engines in my book. Only time I like them is when I feel like racing someone, but I own a workin truck not a toy. Ya they have 300HP Comapred to a 250HP stroker but they put out the same ammount of Torque. Durmaxxes have more Upper end power than lower, and diesel are known for the lower end torque. Thats just my two cents man. Good luck. If you want to blow money on a toy truck go find a Ford with a bad engine put in a Cummins and your transmission of choice. BTW if the injectors have been replaced on that Dmax that why its has so MUCH more power at least in the feeling, has fresh and shiny injectors and if there not stock they do that to. I love Cummins, and I LLOOOOVVVEEE FORDS, but I like Cummins better over the Powerstrokes. I fiqure I buy a truck that the engine outlasts the truck and I buy a Ford that the Truck out last the engine. FORD= For Only Redneck Drivers.... Plus the 7.3L is tried and true and if it wasnt for emission I bet they still be in fords right now.

duramax (01 and 04 numbers)

*Horsepower:
235 hp @ 2,700 RPM (2001)
300 hp @ 3,100 RPM (2004)

*Torque:
500 lb-ft @ 1,600 RPM (2001)
520 lb-ft @ 1,800 RPM(2004)

powerstroke (94-03 peak numbers)
Horsepower (peak)*:
275 HP @ 2,800 RPM

Torque (peak)*:
525 lb-ft @ 1,600 RPM

the difference in peaks in the power curves is what, 100 and 300rpm.. in favor of the duramax in hp, equal or 200rpm higher in torque.

honestly If your itching for a new truck go for it, add some tie rod sleeves and have fun beating it, make sure you use really good filters to avoid injector issues. but it might be wise to stick with your truck since you know the history better, and it's lower mileage. the 7.3 at that stage was very refined with bugs worked out while the duramax was still in its infancy.

Really depends on what you want to drive... Injectors in that dmax aren't going to be cheap but owning any vehicle is never cheap. Maintenance is expensive either way. Just pick one and roll with it.
