P0216 is the VP44 first death cry's.
if you want to slam down the money for a new pump it's up to you, I personaly would walk away since the lift pump is probably toast as well and that is what killed the VP44.
even Cummins has stated the VP44 was a weak pump. if the lift pump died or starts to die and deprives the VP44 of diesel it will fry. I'm willing to say you also had a P0253 code as well (Fuel injection pump fuel valve open circut). this code usualy pops up before the P0216. the VE, P7100, and the new CP3 pumps are considerably more robust when it comes to lift pump problems. the CP3 is the only pump that can actualy draw its own fuel, but lives a better life under positive fuel pressure from the lift pump.
