Help! Can't Decide On A Truck!!

But I do agree with this guy, a 2nd gen 12 valve would be a good engine to get, buy you're gonna have to buy a 12-16 year old truck to get it. I'd go with a 2nd gen 7.3

i plow with my 99 dodge every winter it loves it the only time it overheats is if snow gets packed in teh grille. you cant beat the low end torque of a diesel when your plowin snow its completly different then plowing with a gas engine. do it once and youll wonder why it took so long to switch to a diesel. Now im a die hard dodge guy so obviously i would recommend a 5.9 cummins. i will say a 7.3 PSD is a good engine with proven reliability. its basically what ever you want/need in a truck but i would def. take a look at the dodge before you decide.

don't dodge's have a lot of problems with front end parts in suspension and steering? i dont doubt the cummins engine i doubt the truck. i have an 85 f350 thats soon to get either a 7.3 powerstrok or a 12 valve cummins. it is one tough truck. i'd go ford cummins but if you had to go with a stock engine i'd probably take the ford. any day of the week

Hello ... I am new to this forum also andwill be following this thread.
I too have only driven Fords but the Cummins engine option attracts me as I have always thought them to be "real" diesel engines. My needs are similar to yours but I will not be towing as much, a 4,000lb boat suring the summer is about it.
I have a 85 Benz 300sd and have just started making and using biodiesel which runs great in the benz. I plan on using it in the truck I select also.
From what I have seen thus far, it seems the ford 7.3 is a good engine but I want to learn a lot more.

I have a bone stock straight drive 2006 F150 with the V6 and it is just a base truck, but works fine for me. I would love to drop in a cummins inline 6 diesel but because this truck is a "low life" work truck, I would never get any money back out if I ever sell it.
What is it with the cummins that makes you a fan? Is it a better engine? Seems to me that GM and Ford products did not start out as diesel engines, just upgraded gas motors.

I just bought a 2002 Lariat F350 4x4 super cab.She has 85k on the ticker and has the usual oil leak from the mistery location. I think the yellow one's but anyway so far it is ok. I also have a 2009 GMC crew 4x4 which is 10x nicer but was also a bit more money. I would have to say the Ford feels like a " truck " and I plan on lifting it and we beating the hell out of it. Right now she is stock as can be and has that funny old guy look to it. I really do like it so far.
