Default Looking For A Camper Puller

Hello,

I am new to the site, and I am looking for your expert, un biased opinions. Here is my situation. I run a small RV business and I do quite a bit of pulling. I currently use a 1998 GMC 3500 SLT crew cab, long bed, 4X4, non dually with the 454 gas engine. It does alright pulling the heavier fifth wheels I throw at her, however gas mileage stinks, and she is starting to get some miles on her. I am past the point to step up to a diesel. Here is what I need. I need a crew cab, 4X4 with a long bed. I prefer not to get a dually as I like going through the local automatic car washes. I also need something that allows me to drive 75 to 80 mph while pulling a camper. I have always ruled out Fords, as my last job I had before starting my own business used Ford F350's with the PS. To be honest, I have never seen trucks break down more often then those Fords. However, after looking at a 2008 F450 this past weekend, I was more than very impressed. I guess a Ford is back in the running.

Plus's and concerns:

Chevy/GMC- I prefer the GMC over the Chevy as I like GMC's trim level a little better. I can get a long bed with a full crew cab. Great transmission. And the Duramax seems like a good engine depending on the year. The interiors I find very plain, and not as comfortable than the other two brands.

Ford- The interior of the F450 I looked at is amazing. And since I will be spending a great deal of time in the truck this is important to me. The outside of the truck is very nice too. But the F450 I looked at was a dually. My concern would be reliability issues. Even the service techs at our local Ford dealer told me " The Ford diesels gave them great job security". Good thing they are not salesmen too.

Dodge- The Cummins engines are great, the rest of the truck, not so much. The exterior of the truck is sharp, and interiors are alright. The interior is nicer than the Chevy, but not even close to the Ford. With Dodge the crew cab is nothing more than a extended cab. And I can not get a long bed with the Mega Cab. Transmissions and suspension, enough said.

To be honest I am leaning towards the GMC with Durmax and Allison combo. I am not going to lift the truck or do a lot of mods to the engine. I am needing something dependable, with pulling power at highway speeds. While at the same time be able to use as my daily driver around town.

Thank you for your opinions.

Tim
