3rd gen cummins
I'm on the hunt for one now (03 - 07?) and I was wondering if there are any problems that I should look for? Is there anything that is known to fail? Like the kdp in the 12 valve or the death wobble in a 2nd gen?
Mainly looking for "watch out for this" types of things if there are any...
What about the auto? Will it need beefed before any bombing?
Do they require a airdog before bombing like the 98.5-02?

The 03-04 trucks (build date before 1 Jan 04) had a lower hp rating. The 04.5 (build date of 1 Jan 04 and up) had the 325/600 rating. These trucks had a canister mounted fuel pump that had a horrible failure rate. If you look at a truck that still has one (not likely) you'll want to replace it. (aftermarket like an air dog or fass). I'm pretty sure that they stopped putting the canister mounted pump on in the late 04 model year, the 05's were in tank designs.
A lot of 05's had plastic intercooler ends that were prone to failure with any mods, even sometimes stock.
Most third gens have crappy AC units, with a lot of blend door or recirc door problems, bad ball joint problems, too.
The 06's had a lot of instrument cluster failures.
The long bed trucks with the two piece drive shafts have had a lot of complaints of failure with vibration. There is a one piece drive shaft out there that has fixed this, it is aftermarket.
I have not really heard of a trend on the injector comment, most times the injectors fail is because of poorly filtered fuel. I don't know everything, so there could be an issue that I don't know about.
I love my truck, it's done me right.
