Default Winter Beater

Looking for a winter beater to keep mileage/wear and tear off my other vehicle. The truck would be driven daily on a 30 mile round trip commute, and need to be able to reliably start in chicago winters w/o being plugged in.

Top choice for me so far would be a 94-98 12v (likely out of my price range), but I'm more realistically looking at a 7.3 IDI.

Keep in mind, my budget is low, as this will not be a primary vehicle... would like to keep it under 4k.

I think a gasser would be a more logical choice (considering price & that it would be used primarily in the winter), but i've always wanted to own a diesel...

All that being said, with a working grid heater/glow plugs. What's typical cold start performance on a 12v/IDI? I'm open to other suggestions as well.

Glow plugs are the funnest to work with in my opinion after owning a 7.3 but their good motors.as long as the glow plugs, relays, starter and batteries are in good working order youd be alright my friend
