Anybody on here have an expedition style diesel pickups? I bought my Cummins as a daily driver / tow rig but I'm starting to think about throwing some expedition style in it as well. That way I can leave the Cruiser at home if it will be a mild, high mileage trip. Just looking for insperation!

 

What do you mean with expedition style?

Or something in the style of a landrover defender?

Those mogs are real fuel suckers- not really gifted with a high mileage...

I use my Jeep for both worlds: long trips- brings me to places in the cold and in the heat with a mileage of 25mpg's without a trailer and sufficient speed and as a DD.
Driving around with AT's or MT's costs a lot of extra fuel so I'm going to mount the AT's only for offroadtrips. Chains for the front and the rear replace and assist the lacking MT's.
I use an additional roof carrier to gain space.
Alloy storage cases are lockable and watersealed.
I also have a camper trailer for the weekend- nothing really big, but heated and comfortable.

Future planed add-ons:
-hydraulic winch
-front locker

and I'm done...

 

Sure! But smaller... I'm looking for insperation to modify my '05 Ram 2500.

Basically I'm looking for diesel trucks that are modified to live out of for a week or two! My original plan included a slide-in pop-up style camper... Then I realized I'm broke.

 

I have seen some ford excursions built for offroading, there are also tons of different styles of UNIMOGS

 

Yeah, being in the Land Cruiser community I see a ton of those modified for vehicle expeditions. I'm mainly looking for pick-up specific stuff that I can incorperate into my truck.

 

Mitsubishi FG 140 s are often used Mitsubishi Canter/FG 140 4x4 buildup - The HUBB for expidition campers.There cheaper than a Duramax very good on fuel and come with a 175k mile factory warrenty.Exelent work truck with a water cooled intercooler,and very good exhaust brake.

 

Lund used to sell some fancy racks that installed in the bed - very much like a work rack but looked a lot better. Im not sure if they have them now. Im sure you could make something thats functional and looks good if you have a welder at your disposal and are creative.

 

If this $$$ is the limiting factor you should start with some very basic to find out what you need and want.
A Cummins does offer a lot of towing capability.
From experience I do not like to mount and dismount a tent on top of the roof.
Because a DD has to offer some flexibility. It goes on my nerves to change tires, why should I start to mount a roof tent...
It is easier to couple a ready-to-go trailer onto the hitch. maybe you can get a M116 3/4ton trailer:


Punch in some cool tinted boat windows, add a heater- and you have a very cool camper trailer with the ability to build the interior as you like.
And you can step on the roof and mount additional storage trays.
It is much simpler to add storage lids on the side on a solid wall too.
It is maybe not the best areodynamic style, but it is rock solid and you can throw on the same tires as the towing truck uses.

I would love to use one of those tiny camper trailers, but the limiting thing is money- they start at 13.000$. To much money for an occasional trip.

 

I could see myself falling out of the tent drunk. Looks kool.

 

I've thought about doing an "expedition trailer" that I could pull behind the Land Cruiser and/or the Dodge but I really want to start trailering the Cruiser everywhere. It's built past the point of being comfortable on the street!

I really wish I could afford a pop-up slide-in camper...
