You could very well be right actually.
I haven't looked at the design of the brackes on the axle, but it looks like they had both shocks mounted to the axle with one tab and one bolt, which is single shear situation with loads on opposing sides, and when you have over 1000 lbs worth of engine, single shear on a 5/8" bolt generally isn't going to work so well. Just my two cents...

i had an 83 k-5 blazer that i jumped on stock suspension 3 times and never broke. goes to show that money dont fix everything
