locker or lim slip

locker or lim slip
I have a limited slip D70 rear with an open D60 front right now. I want to put either a locker with manual hubs or a limited slip in the front, whichever can be found cheaper. I know the limited slip is the more likely option but I'm not holding anything out. Anyone had any success with any in particular? Should I steer clear of eBay and the salvage yards and get a new one?

this i know about ok i was very dissapointed with the vacum shift front end so i ditched it for the ems lockout hub conversion and vacume delete it comes with everythiing you need to install has good timken bearings and bolts right together i havent had a whole lot of miles on it maybe 1000 before i did a complete teardown on my engine but was very happy with the whole fit and finish of it as far as locker or limited slip up front if you want to go in straight lines with the hubs locked then locker it will work good for turn in sloppy mud but youll need to have the tires spinning a limited slip would be a good alround choice but clutch packs do wear out i think the best choice for would be a air/electric/mechanical locker up front in the rear you can get away with a locker better but youll wear tires out faster and axle shafts get a little weak easpically in the 70s if you always turning sharp on the road again i would go with air/electric/mechanical sorry this is so long but i think it will help you

you must put in lockout hubs t be able to run anything except an open front end this is because the front axle in you truck diconnects one axle shaft which allows the whole front end to unlock but if you put a limited slip up there or a locker it will not unlock and you wont be able to turn you need to be able to unlock both axle shafts to be able to run these differentials

Great answer. I'm going thru the same thing and ran out of cash(stupid no paying customers). So my truck get drivin only short distances!
Never get a used locker/etc unless you know its been used very little! When it comes to axels it sucks putting time and or money into it just to have it break a month later!
I did put a locker in the rear and it made a huge diffrence in offroading/mudding

not true because you need to be able to unlock the axle shafts from the wheels to be able to run anything other than an open diff on the street and because you cannot unlock totally the front axle on dodge pickups he would have to buy a lockout hub conversion like i did

Isn't the point of having a limited slip to have a diff that behaves as open until some mechanical condition is met to engage the lockup mechanism? Because if the Trac-Loc I currently have in the rear is supposed to keep the tires locked up it should chirp taking corners, which it doesn't do. So limited slips are safe up front without the locking hubs.
Thanks for the heads up though on the used diff. I've found several but none of them have been used for awhile, so I think I'll steer clear.
