Default Alpine Loop

Has anyone traveled the Alpine Loop in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. I want to take a trip with my boys and drive the loop with some camping along the way. Are there places to camp along the loop and is it suited for a truck like mine?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,
David

We traveled part of it 4 years ago in my truck. Some of the most beautiful scenery you can imagine! We didn't travel the entire loop, as we were told by the locals my truck may not enjoy certain sections. Check this out:Wildernet.com - Alpine Loop Scenic Byway, Colorado Scenic Byways It's a write-up on the Loop. Take a gander at the "trip reports" at the bottom. There are bypasses for the roughest parts and trail conditions change yearly. May want to do like I did and get the locals opinion before attempting it. Especially if you are going without a buddy to pull you, and your truck, out of a jam.

I will be up in Silverton in Summer 2010 for 3 weeks minimum and the Loop is on our list. My 2nd gen 12v is a bit smaller than yours so we may be open for some of the tougher trails.

Check out the DVD "Jeeping God's Country" by David Boyer and the book "Colorado Trails - South Central Region".
Amazon.com: Colorado Trails South Central Region (9781930193291): Peter Massey and Jeanne Wilson: Books

The author traveled the strong majority of the region trails in a Suburban.
