Default Some general dmax aftermarket questions.

Hey guys. I'm new to this site and doing a little research for a friend with an'01 LB7. He's wanting to add a tuner, but isn't sure which direction to go. He's looking for better than stock performance and economy, not tryng to get into high HP levels. Can you do custom/live tunes with DMAXes? I'm a 7.3 guy, so I have no idea how y'all tune your trucks.
One last question, what would be a good turbo upgrade, if any for this application. I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions later. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yeah you can do custom tuning and have a 5 pos "chip"

if you want better performance and want custom/live tunes you can get efi live. i know big bad diesel carries efi live

Thanks for the info. I'll do some looking into EFI live. What kind of hp amd mileage would be reasonable to expect from just the tuning and all else being stock? Should he get a CAI and bigger exhaust? I don't even know what the stock lb7 exhaust size is.

An exhaust wouldn't hurt, but his intake is good for around 500hp so he should be fine with the stock one. I just got the efi live on my 02 lb7 and you can get some VERY high hp tunes, but a stock trans is only good for about 90hp over stock, so you'll want to be careful with that. Depending on the tunes you get you can get some pretty good mileage, if I use my economy tune and stay out of the throttle I can get around 18mpg, and I have a 4 1/2" lift and 35's. Hope this helps you out.

90hp over stock is a good general rule of thumb, but for people like me i like to push things, i helped one members truck on this site a long time ago and he made 470 hp on stock trans and didnt limp it but im sure his trans is long gone now

other tucks like lly's i have tuned have 400hp and their hp curve stays like that for 1500rpms and that tuck limped on the dyno, too much torque

100 hp was where he said he was wanting to be. What upgrades are necessary on the trans? He's kind of tight, so I advised him to get a tow tune and economy tune before I started this thread. Being a 7.3 guy, I know all about trans. crapping out.

Well, my trans was crap to begin with and I ran my efi on 450hp and it was ok if I was careful but I toasted the trans last week doing a burnout, so depending on how he drives he doesn't need to do anything. With 90hp over stock he will be fine, much more than that and he could get a transgo shift kit, that would help him hold alittle bit more. Hope this helps.
