i know its a little off the diesel topic but i have been looking into getting a set of the HID lights for my dmax. i was wondering if anyone else has been running a set? and how do they like them? i have seen tons of them for sale on ebay and stuff but they all seem way too cheap, like under 100$ cheap. i have heard of good HID kits for 300$+. so what i would like to know is where can i get a good set of LEGAL after market HID lights for my truck?

 

There is some debate about the legality of them. And from noticing some of the aftermarket crap running the streets now days, I can see why they are supposedly illegal. I don't know if the cheap ones are just mis-adjusted or not (Me thinks they probably are since people usually can't adjust replacement incandescents either!) but it seems like most of them blind on coming traffic . . .

I sure want to try some also. I am just going to wait until I find some good ones that someone I know has verified first. I hate being ripped off!!! (It is the same as those cheap 1157 LED replacements. When you can't tell the brake lights are on at night, I would have to say there is a problem.)

 

one of my friends has a 12v cummins and he bought a really expensive set of them and they are supposed to be legal i guess, because it replaces your entire headlight with a special new projector lense and all the good stuff. ill ask him where he got it at

 

throwing a set of hid's in a reflector style headlight (stock) isnt a great idea, you can blind oncoming traffic very easily, using a Projector style headlight assembly is the best idea because it focuses the light to where you need it, infront of you on the road, not all over the darn place

 

i am running hids in my stock headlight housing i also have them in my high beams and my fogs and they arent the really expensive ones and they have lasted for over a year now i know that the law in tn says that if they werent factory installed when the vehicle is new that they are illegal and putting them in a projector doesnt really dim them very much they are still very bright my buddy put mine in his gmc with projectors and they still were really bright

 

I don't know about the whole legal aspect, but I have a set of 8k's in my truck and I love them. I have never been messed with by any cops. I got mine on ebay for like 65 bucks. I have had no problems out of them. They are bright as hell. My only issue is that it is a tad hard to see when it is raining.

 

Just replacing the lights with HID burners is not legal (at least here in California) but I'm pretty sure it's the same in other states. HIDs are only legal with headlights with a projector style beam. Also OEM Xenon (HID) lighting systems have to have built in height adjusters. They have a level sensor on the vehicle so the headlight properly adjusts if the load on the vehicle changes so you can see down the road and you are not blinding oncoming traffic. This is why factory xenon systems cost so much because of all the extra parts.

 

I thought the auto adjust (For varying vehicle load) was only available on high end cars. I didn't think that was automatically on all HID OEM lighting. . . . .

 

i have a set of cheapys in my truck i love them ... i went with 6k lights ... the 8ks are a little too blue and i know in cali and at least were i am they will pop you if your headlights are blueish ... so the 6ks dont get too much attention

 

I have a set of 8ks in my truck and I love them I bought the whole kit for my lows and fogs with shipping they were $86.00. They are amazing I never use my high beams anymore because the lows are so bright, and I haven't had any trouble with the cops or people flashing their lights at me.
