Ok, Funny I posted that on the second and then the next day I got pulled over in Lawrence, Kansas for the same thing
. Sorry to bring back up a old thread but here is some info that may help. Lawrence just pisses me off so I called Highway Patrol and asked them to clear up some questions. Here is the answers.
On your License plate, the BL 18 means 18,000 max COMBINED VEHICLE WEIGHT. that is truck, passengers, trailer, Skidsteer, everything. You can not be over the weight limit. The Officer said if you think you may be pushing the limit, go ahead up to the next level of 24 or 30 or 36. It's not a pretty fine. I see forums where people are saying no it is only the truck weight, so you only need the BL 12 or BL 6. Wrong. if you haul, you need bigger plates. The weight on these trucks is staggering. My GVW rating is 9000. University Central Missouri's Autoshop's lifts can't pick it up.
As for Plates on only the front- We do not drive Commercially, unless you do, then the IRP (International Registration Plan) covers you. However, Missouri Statute 301-130 states only one plate shall be issued and is to be on the front, Missouri will no longer sell additional plates.
http://www.modot.org/mcs/documents/Statute-OnePlate.pdf Here it is. Print it off. Hand it to the officer.
The officer told me also, Do we write Kansas Drivers Tickets for not having a plate on the front. Missouri law requires our cars to have 2 plates..... I liked this guy.
He also said to call the Highway patrol and report what department is harassing you. They will personally call their department and tell them you are legally licensed and explain why. Might even be better if you have the officer who is giving you a hard time's name and number.
Set those guys straight. Think. There enforcing laws they have no idea what they are.
(I'm not a fan of cops, I hate how in elementary school and DARE they try to look like your friend but as soon as you turn 16 they sit in front of the school parking lot waiting for you to do 20 in a 15 so they can slap that ticket on you
)
