When I take my truck up to KC later this month I will be buying about 700lbs of 5/8" steel plate. I asked to have it cut into 2-3 rectangular slabs (approximately 45" x 24") so they can fit between the fender wells in the bed of our trucks or be slid further back towards the tailgate. Each piece should weigh 200-350lbs (not sure yet and we will need to weigh these ourselves to know how much we are adding). I plan for these to be community property to anyone in our group who needs more weight for the class they are pulling in.

What I need from you is a consensus on how to make it class legal to mount this to/through the bed floor and make it universal between all of our trucks so everyone can use it. I have a drill press in my garage but there is no way I can get any attachment/alignment holes drilled through those monsters. Let me know what you think would work easiest.

Oh come on John just pick them up , put on the o'drill press and punch a hole in it.

No really: a guy could make an angle iron cage that fits between the wheelwells for them to set in so they dont slide around. A guy can build a top so they will be fastened down.

Now for mounting to the truck bed is something that will have to be worked out cause some of us have shortbeds and others have long. Also some have gooseneck balls and some dont?


Not to be nosey but is it cheaper then one of those water bags that fit in the bed? I think they will add about 600#.

I have one of those water bags in my storage building. It cost less than $200 new and I was going to sell it. I don't know if they are legal. The weight they add (not sure if it is that much) is spread out to far from where it is needed to do the best (in my thinking it needs to be over/behind the rear axle). They also take up a lot more real estate in the bed floor.

I wasn't for sure if they were legal or not? I don't think they have a spot cut out for a gooseneck ball either?

water is what 7lb a gallon..... i was told we need them close to the tailgate.. or past the axel... to transfer waite better..... .. bring them to pauls one weekend.. and we can jump on it... and get them done for ya john.... if the whole crew comes.. i bet we get some beer drank.. and something built...... any body second my motion...
