Ok, now i see. About a year ago i was looking to buy a cummins 6.7 for my swap. I went and looked at a rolled 2010 C&C. The cab was off and i could read the aisin on the side of the trans. The guy told me it was a 6speed 68RFE.

So why couldn't somebody order up a loaded up C&C and put a box on it themselves

I guess in theory you could, but other major differences...C&C comes from the factory with a de-rated engine, producing less HP and Torque than the 3500. Also rear end ratios are limited and 70mph rear is the norm. different cab trim, and many dealers are not equipped or allowed to perform warranty on the 4500 and 5500 series trucks. In my city we have 2 Dodge dealers and neither are qualified, so cant sell them or service them.

Dont quote me on this but I beleive the top rail of the frame is also different to accomodate decks and dump boxes.
