If We Can Do Better, We Must Do BetterI enjoy words just as much as I enjoy tools. My favorite of the latter is my 5-pound hammer, which began life as a sledgehammer. One day after school, my friend Jay and I were throwing it around in my backyard. Unfortunately, Jay gave the sledgehammer a good toss, and the long wooden handle shattered in the middle when it hit some cement. I knew I was going to get in trouble for breaking the handle, so I quickly sawed the sharp end off and wrapped it in tape. I told my Dad, “The hammer works better this way.” I could barely use it at the time, because the head was so heavy, but as I got older, I found more and more uses for it. Instead of requiring many swings from a lesser mallet (marring the surface), most jobs took just one tap using my short-handled, Thor-like sledgehammer.
