Default 1947 2 ton chevy retor mod

My dad gave me a 1947 2 ton chevy dump truck that has been sitting in his yard for years. I want to do a retro mod on it and make it a flat bed. I am looking to dropping a larger inline diesel. I am looking in the size range of a Cummins ISC (8.3L) but am not limited to that. I would love to have some suggestions on motor (prefer mechanical) and trans combos (prefer manuals) with there pros and cons. I will NOT drop a V motor in is so please don't suggest it.

Drop a 8.3 backed by a 10 speed road ranger that's what I would do

Are they all mechanical? Give me a hammer and a wrench I am good to go. Give me an ECU and I am lost.

Another option is a dt466. But to run the RR you will need a air compressor and all that. I think a 6 or 7 spd spicer backed by a brownie box would also be neat. As far as a 8.3 being made mechanical I'm not sure

The air compressor is easy and I prefer to have air on my vehicles.

As robust as a 12v is I am looking to go on the heavy side and I do not want to over tax it.

I was just saying that cause ford and freightliner both used a 5.9 up into their 7 range trucks (ie fl70&f750) it was just a thought.

I am aware of that but I have a 5.9 24v and I push it a little to hard with the loads I pull and would like some thing a little over powered so I don't have to worry.
