Default Better MPG via tuning chip ????

Sorry for asking many questions lately, I am new and learning.

Before I jump into a making of my own performance chip, I have found a lot of chips claiming that adding a chip will benefit to MPG.

I always question this claim with a basic logic like, if there are ways of making an engine run noticeably more efficient, why those R&D engineers of the engine do not know or do not apply those ways into their engines before launching.

The R&D of an engine should know their engine better than anyone, don't they?


Note: Some explanation is like this. The chip rises the rail pressure by which it makes the fuel droplet smaller and easier to burn. UM.....it may be true but even the BOSCH company says their 3rd CR system of 180MPa with piezo injectors only has 3% better efficiency than the 2nd CR system.

This is a "novice" explanation. Rail pressure raise is limited. Higher pressure results in higher wear. Therefore raising pressure is limited.

One understandable explanation is the development of higher torque numbers. You can shift the torque range into lower ranges. A wider power band delivers more efficiency. Thats one valid explanation.

Manufacturers have to build their vehicles to work under every environmental condition. So extreme values under heat and extreme cold are not used in normal conditions. This gives the tuner the room to devlop performance chips.

The engineers know their engines- but they are bond to costs and demands and factory warranties.

So, they develop their products not to the limit- always within a safe range.

Good luck with developing chips- it's an art

I have actually run my engine with my chip since March this year. With a lot of modification both HW and SW till today, I can confirm your words that it is more of an ART than Science.

Yep...a lot of fun because I know my chip inside-out and now learning my engine outside-in.

Hmm, you ask very simple questions for someone "knowing" his chip inside out.
Engine chip mapping is not possible without knowing what happens inside the engine. Everything else is simply & costly try and error.

Most hardware tuners outperform chiptuning in the viewpoint of reliability. It is easy to set marks behind the red line. Be careful.
