Default Got this crazy idea

So I was at work and this random thought popped in my head. Would a turbo make a perpetual motion device. Now I've thought about it and it will work in theory. Have a pipe connecting the compressor outlet to the turbine inlet and start it with a shot from an air hose, it will spin the impeller and create pressure inside the pipe, pressure has to go somewhere so it will leave through the turbine spinning it and in turn continuing to spin the impeller. I have no idea if it would actually work but that's my random diesel related thought for the day. Tell me what you think.

What would you use it for?

No use except as a conversation piece. You gotta admit it would be interesting to see a turbo spooling itself. Lol

I hope this doesn't turn into the type of conversation where the guy talked about running his headers back to his intake....sweet mods bro

Nothing can make a perpetual motion device.

It doesn't work in theory.

It doesn't even begin to work in theory.

No.

So the theory that the intake side of the turbo produces the pressure that spins the exhaust side which is connected to the intake side making it spin more doesn't work? Seems to make sense as far as the mechanics go. I never said that it was guaranteed to work and stay working on its own. Have you personally done it? If so I would like to see a video that proves that it doesn't work. And if not then keep the negativity aside. I said that it was an interesting thought.

Mods may not be that of a full race rig but I enjoy them. The Zoodad scoop yielded better air flow and a drop in intake temps. 4" short pipe gave some better flow on the exhaust side with much less restriction. Upcoming mods consist of studs, EGR blockoff, custom tunes, and a stronger clutch.

I was talking about your turbo idea...your actual mods are pretty smart. You gonna use the turbo from your truck when you start breaking head studs? just a little ribbing

I might see if the whole concept with work at all when I do the EGR since I'll have to have the whole top end out of the truck anyway, why not have a little fun and do some experimenting

The turbocharger is not 100% efficient. First of all, there's friction in the bearings that will take energy out of the system; without constantly putting energy into the system, the friction will steal it all. After that, the turbines themselves don't harness anywhere close to all of the energy they can; most of it goes right on through.

If you take another pipe and connect the turbine outlet to the compressor inlet, then at least you'll have a good battery.

As the others have said there is too much energy loss in spinning the turbine. However, if you take the outlet of the compressor side of a turbo and plug it into the inlet of the turbine side and make a rudimentary combustion chamber in between you can make a centrifugal turbine engine. You will need to add an injector, fuel pump, I ran mine on gas for a little while until it caught on fire. They make a tremendous amount of noise, and can be started with a leaf blower.
