You don't even have to really move, just find a buddy in another state and register the truck to his state and address. As long as your runnin out of state plates they can't do anything to ya. My wife moved to Redding for some months and when she wanted to get Cali plates they told her it was gonna be almost $1G to make it legal. Those Illinois plates did just fine for the entire time she stayed there.

the only truck that came with the special style exhaust tips are the DPF trucks do to the high temps of the exhaust and with the after market exhaust systems for those trucks they are designed the same way.

As for your truck you can do an aftermarket exhaust as long as you keep the factory federally mandated emissions equipment i.e. cat, DPF or what not. As of last I heard California considers a turbo to be a muffling device on diesels so what ever you choose to do after the cat or emissions equipment is perfectly fine. You are also ok with doing a different air filter and what not as long as the equipment is 50state emissions legal and CARB approved you can change it they are pretty much just like gas motors now.

Turbos aren't muffler devices by state law, no. But it doesn't matter; all you have to do is convince the guy doing the smog test. Air filters and cat backs were specifically mentioned as permissable in that CARB emissions-guide going around a while back. I don't think much of anything Diesel-specific has a CARB sticker yet, because the CARB refuses to publish real emissions testing guidelines for Diesels.



It has been our California state legislature's thinly-veiled agenda for the past 30 years to push as many lifestyle snow birds out of our state as possible... The ends that we've had to go to achieve that have been drastic. The irritating part is that it would've worked already if it wasn't for the massive influx of Mexicans moving north; we weren't expecting immigration from that direction. That set us back some.

Every person that moves away from this state lowers the price of these beautiful, perfect little beach town homes around me that much closer to what I can afford... Not to mention shortens my commute by ever so much.

 

Then what's the point of doing anything to the exhaust if you can't touch that stuff?

 

Well technically you are not allowed to remove any of that stuff if it originally came with in any state do to the fact that is federally mandated emissions equipment California just happens to be one of the few states that enforces it. Personally this new smog emissions test don't really bother me if it helps to keep some of these excessive smoke loving individuals that make it a point to smoke as much as possible at all times. It sucks for those of us that do actually use our diesel trucks as real trucks. I do not really think the DPF system was the best way to go about it but do to ignorance of both law makers and a hand full of trend chasing diesel drivers we got stuck with this.

There are lovely ways to go about doing things to your truck if emission test are the same time frame as gas jobs they should be every other year so as long as you dont mind hanving a stock truck for a week every 2 years you are fine.

 

Just do the out of state thing, find a relative, friend, etc, and get it registered there. I am currently stationed in VA but I keep my WI tags on my car, straight pipe, lowered to the ground, no front plate etc, they cant touch me, inspections, smog? not for me.....

I will be keeping my WI tags when I eventually move to OR also, I can tint my windows as much as I want, no front tag, etc, Unless I drive reckless the police cant touch me.

Of course a cop could pull you over, but they usually dont want to go thru the hassle of looking up your current states laws etc, its just easier to get the next victim.....

 

I love my state but have really considered getting the yellow plates of nm... From what I've been told you can register your truck to a p.o.box.

 

I like your style... We do this in Canada too. Insurance is also cheaper in some provinces than others.

 

Ohio runs a smog test for pretty much all dieseld under 10,001lbs gvwr. it's just an exhaust clarity test, checks the percentage of particulate matter in the exhaust on acceleration, then at speed, then decel. think the limit is 12%? i'm not sure since my dodge's door plate lists gvwr as 10,100 and I was exempt, just had to take it to the EPA field office and let them inspect for tampering, stock exhaust, stock air filter, etc. and wrote me an exemption..

this is only certain counties tho. if I wanted I would just register in another county.
