Prius VS. Diesel, Diesel Engine Swaps, & More!State Of Biodiesel Address
Hazen Criddle has been listening to the wrong skeptics. When he wrote, on page 22 of the April '10 edition of Diesel Power, that biodiesel takes more energy to make than what it produces-he was wrong. The latest study from the United States Department of Agriculture (http://www.usda.gov/oce/reports/ener...iesel91409.pdf) shows that every unit of energy put into producing biodiesel results in 4.56 units of usable energy. This includes everything that goes into planting, growing, harvesting, transporting, and processing a U.S. crop into a U.S.-produced, renewable fuel. In 1998, the USDA said this "energy balance" was 3.2:1. It keeps getting better, because American farmers and biodiesel producers keep getting more efficient. If our country is going to make real progress freeing ourselves from foreign oil, the hardworking Americans who are producing a homegrown fuel deserve credit for their innovation.
