Default Question About Programmers

so i just had a guy whos a total idiot tell me that putting an sct programmer (or any kind of programmer or tunner) on my truck does nothing to add power and just hurts ur mpg...at the time me and him where having a nice little exchange and the only thing that came up in my mind as to how they add power was to say i have an aftermarket intake that puts more air in but the comp doesnt know that so its not adding the fuel i need and by putting a programmer on i can fix that...my question to yall is when i see this guy tomorrow what else can i say...i know hes an idiot and totally wrong but i couldnt think of any more reasons to explain y...so tomorrow when i see him i wanna go in guns blazing and see the look on his face when i kill his stupid little idea so any other ways to explain this would be awsome (btw hes an outright *** so if i make him cry i wont feel bad at all)

A programmer or a tuner usually "tricks" the computer into sending more fuel in when needed. It usually also messes with your air to fuel ratio and tries to bring more air in. Also the way they usually hurt is when you have a stock exhaust and the motor is not allowed to breathe. This also tends to hurt power and mpgs. But if he was right I guess the only way to have more power was to have it completely stock. hmm don't seem right to me. and the more power(to a certain point that is) that a pickup has usually the better mpgs it gets because the motor is not having to try and lug the rest of the pickup and tends to perform better in every all around aspect. I hope i helped you out a bit.

Some people just don't understand it. they think anything stock is better than anything that you do to it. the reason alot of people BOMB their pickups is to improve MPG'S and longevity of the engine. Does this guy have a diesel? Usually if they don't they insinuate that diesels are bad and loud and hurt the environment.

Some programmers also change the spray pattern of your injectors i believe and spray the fuel more directly into the bowl
