the only run away diesel ii've experienced was pretty easy to explain. CAT D4 + natural gasline that wasn't suppose to be there + the hole ripped in it when he hit it = a short run away. there were a few interesting moments when it happened.

Our 2 dump trucks were down at work and they rented this old Mack Single cab dump with a Thermodine? engine. Sorry don't know how to spell it correctly. Anyway,it was a power house and every now and again,(I don't remember how)the engine would run back wards and we would put it in high gear and let the clutch out to get it to shut down. One day one of the drivers was running through the gears and the engine took off and started running away. Jake didn't do any good,so we ended up using a fire extinguisher to get it to shut down. Didn't run for crap after that.

didnt see it but when i lived out in Kansas i heard of a similar "runaway like Hock said - - Williams natural gas pipe line was being worked on or around and a Cat 318 back hoe got caught in a gas leak and took off..............ended up burning it to the ground before all was said and done

who says you can't turn a diesel 10,000 rpms??????

Last summer I lost a turbo seal in the vw, luckly it shut off before it exploded. A large cloud of blue smoke is bad news.

had to deal with a few run aways. Most of them are at work. I had my cummins in my dodge run away once right after I rebuilt it had it kinda tuned wrong and had to cut the air to it .

Sure have. Had an old Oliver 880 tractor we used to tow Dad's old combine in from the field when it died. While pulling a slight hill, the front wheels of the tractor came off the ground about 2 1/2 feet and stalled in that position. The front end then came crashing back down to earth, starting the engine running backward. It sounded like hell and puked about a gallon of engine oil out of the intake stack before we got it shut down. Didn't seem to hurt in any though. That was a tough old tractor!
