Just a friendly FYI ....
Not meaning to disagree with anyone, but in checking the '81 version of Bentley 'Service Manual" for diesels ... 1977-1981, including pickup truck (Wanda), the first paragraph of the 1st section (LUBRICANTS), 2nd sentence sez ...
"Use only name brand oils labeled """For Service API/CC""" or """MIL-L-46152""" oil in diesel engines."
Being a 'newbie', I have no idea what those references are, but will focus on them in the future.

Actually the change began in 2007. And just try to find a VW dealer that recognizes this ... or even follows the VWoA requirements that synthetic oil MUST be used. I have been to about 10 or so dealers, checking, and absolutely none of them ... after being grilled ... use synthetic oil .... nor even have any modicum of knowledge regarding the '06 PD diesel versions, or diesels at all. WHY?? Because IMO approx. only 10% of the VWs in America are diesels. My theory is that they, in line with the California and NJ, and others, who have a hatred for diesels, simply fall in line and only focus on gas models.
Thankfully with the 09 versions, this 'may' be changing ... since it is a country wide version that is accepted ... no thanks to the environmental jerks.
VWoA put out, in late 06 as I recall, the approval of 507.00; but as I said, 'stealerships' ignored it ... along with common sense items relatice to diesel maintainance. I for one, and others of TDI club, actually contacted VWoA and got documents from the head office acknowledging this. Just thought I'd throw this in.
Stealerships, along with the evironmentalists, are ... IMO ... the worse detriments to diesel automobile sales since they are accustomed to gas, and don't want to retrain, restock, etc. Thankfully the club has a list, nationwide, of VW experts, just like members of this community, who know what they are doing, and are generally far more economical.

505.01 is what the original oil spec for the pumpe duce. When vw rolled out the new diesels with all the emissions crap on it, 09+ they changed they oil standards to the new 507.00 standard which covers everything from 97 to current diesel engines.

It's just Volkswagen own oil specs
Sometimes its just one digit different, as in our example 50501 an really old fashioned oil and 50601 which was the used oil before 50700 came in for modern diesels.
506 and 507 have a very low ash when burned. That makes them a good oil for those engines.
The German stealership charge you about 27,99€ up to 35€ for a quart oil for that 507...

From my perspective ... beings that the truck is approaching 30 years age ... and has 169,000 miles on it, I doubt very much if over the years a specific type of oil was used; more than likely, whatever was available ... and cheap.
That is until now under my ownership. I'm in hopes to keep Wanda for years, and to not worry until I get to 3-4-500,000 miles. Same with the diesel 06 Jetta.
