Default NEWBIE ADVICE-im shopping for a truck

I am shopping for a 80's or early 90's ford 6.9-7.3 or a 1st gen cummins. I know all vehicles are known to have some major design flaw (frames cracking in certain places etc. ) I just would like to know of any specific things to look for when shopping for one of these two trucks. Any help would be great! Thanks

The cummins is my first choice. they are way harder to find around my area. Is there any one year to avoid? Are the automatic trannies decent? What to look out for?

powerstroke. my friend has almost 500,000 miles on it and no probs. Also, if you want to black smoke, dont get a first gen cummins
