Default Torque From Starter

Does any one have any idea how much torque a starter like on the 2nd gen. cummins would put out. And any idea the rpms it would turn. These starters must have some unbelievable power. Had an idea for one of these things. Not a good idea, but one those hold my beer and watch this idea

OK tq and fast spinning.

They have a HUGE advantage over teh engine due to the gear sizes.

You can try the local autozone. They list it as 1.4 kw for say a 2001. If you know the gear reduction, someone could probably figure out the torque.

If you want incredible torque look for an old school say 79 big block starter. I know that the one on my moms olds diesel was a beast. Just try laying on you back and lifting the darn thing over your head to put in the 2 bolts that hold it. I think it was weighed at 75+ lbs. It is also listed as 1.4kw.

The 2004 <acronym title="Duramax"><acronym title="Duramax">Dmax</acronym></acronym> starter is listed as 2.2 kw.

The 1990 Cummins is listed as a gear reduction at 3kw. (740 watts per HP means approx 4 hp) What could you want with 4 hp of DC drive motor, something like that would only have about 60 seconds at 200+ amp draw.

If you want real power find a 24v one from a big rig at the junk yard, they put out more torque. Just think about it. 12.7l at 20+:1 compression. Easily 2x the power of one in a light duty truck.

If you really want a high torque fast spinning starter, look for an air starter for an old detroit diesel.

Or check out these Ingersoll Rand | Air Starter Selection Guide
