Mag Hytec + Performax Temp Sending unit

Default Mag Hytec + Performax Temp Sending unit

Anyone have a problem mounting their Performax temperature sending unit in a Mag Hytec differential cover?

The included adapters do not fit the differential cover. The instructions in the Performax package says 1/8" NPTF sending unit, while the differential cover has a 1/8" npt fitting. My guess is that the NPTF is a fine thread pipe thread and the NPT is a standard pipe thread.

Default Pictures of my issues

OK. Here are pictures of the cover with my issues.

Picture 1 of the rear plug that should be 1/8" NPT, top plug that should be 1/8" NPT, and then the sending unit from ISSPRO 1/8" NPT (went to hardware store and it fits all of the 1/8" NPT stuff there) 1/4" ISSPRO bushing for sending unit and the "SUPPOSED" 1/8" NPT from the cover.

Can someone tell me what size the plug in the rear of the Mag-Hytec cover is?

Next time I'm at the shop with my truck I'll try to pull the plug out and see what it is. I JUST got a mag-hytec cover on my 2nd gen dana 70 and would like to put a temp guage in, too.

The plug on the back is a 7/16" 20 or a -4 fitting. Got an adapter from NAPA.

Plan on putting all of the gauges in over the weekend. May hold off on the oil temp and install the sending unit in the top of the diff cover so that I can compare the readings to see if they are comparable. I am worried that the upper location may not read if the truck sits for a short period of time as there will be no oil slinging up from the ring gear to the sending unit.

yeah but it's not like it'll heat up if it sits, either. the diff fluid temp won't really matter when you've decelerated to a stop or sat. you just want to watch it mainly when you're pulling a grade and occasionally on flat land towing heavy.

I am have the temp sending unit installed in the back of the cover. Just to see how it responds, I am going to leave it there for a while and then move it to the top to see how much difference there is in the readings. It only takes a couple of minutes to move it from one location to the other, and I only loose about 1 oz of fluid (max) when removing the plug in the back.

Sounds good, I'm interested to hear if you get different readings. All I've got is my brain deduced theory.
