Scientific Minds Wanted Here
I know from past discussion that we have some serious scientific minds on this site. I have some homework for you. Just reading a post from bow2no1 about a tree hugger harrasing him, and having been through this myself we need some facts. Wee need to put together some facts here about our trucks and the impact they have on the enviroment. If we can get enough facts, figures and cited studies put together here I will format it into a document that we can print out and keep a few copies in our trucks. This way when we are assaulted by these doogooders we can just hand it to them and tell em to read the facts. As times go this problem is only going to get worse, so we may as well meet it head on and be ready for them.

A joint US DOE and USDA study found that for every unit of fossil fuel used to produce biodiesel netted 3.2 units of engery gained when the fuel was burned. Or otherwise a 320% positive engery balance.

There are many links to a study of diesel exhaust and emissions done by some fella in britian. I don't have it here but basically his disrotation goes on to say that the diesel is higher energy per unit, lower emissions per unit and less of a problem to manufacture and so on it goes.
The real deal can be found at dieselprogress.com it is a diesel mag for the commercial guys that I subscribe to and there is plenty of info about the Tier's and Bins and all that sort of thing.

He's actually right but this is something the industry has always known. Diesel's have always been far more efficient in the power to hydrocarbon ratio. Now that our sulfur content was cut from 500ppm to 50ppm the efficiency rating radically dropped. Ironically enough we are still more efficient than gassers. Does this tell you something? The EPA was just looking for another way to justify their paychecks and make themselves look good to Congress at the same time. Meanwhile, diesel production is still not back to normal from Katrina hitting the Gulf of Mexico. Is there a plotted patern here? What do over 77% of the commercial vehicles in the US burn?

IMO your wasting your time even if you show a leaflicker indisputable facts you will never change there mind or show them the error of there ways. If they wanted to know the truth they would research it for themselves there to stupid to learn anything other then what the media tells them. Just blow the soot on them as you leave.

The U.S. EPA derives their pollution control standards primarily from a standpoint of reducing greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming and smog.
Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) is a major issue with smog, and unfortunately it's one of the primary gases emitted from a diesel engine.
Most of the rest of the world concentrates on carbon monoxide emissions, that being a primary gas emitted from a gasoline or propane engine.
The EPA has shoved the 'diesels are dirty' agenda down our throats in this country so everyone who would rather absorb what they're 'taught' in the media than actually open a book and read will believe diesel engines are worse polluters than gas engines.
From a volumetric, thermal, and mechanical efficiency standpoint they aren't, actually they are far superior...
HOWEVER, the visible smoke and soot present is the biggest hurdle to clear before diesels can gain acceptance from Idiot America.......
