I'll tell you what I hate is drivers that are to dumb to turn off the jake when speeding up... sounds like crap when it kicks in everytime you shift...
"jake shifting" allows you to shift faster, you don't have to wait for the rpm to drop down. Doesn't work well if you are loaded, but really speeds things up empty.

Engine brakes are loud, and there are a lot of them on the roads. They probably outnumber loud motorcycles 200/1 as a conservative estimate.

Too many Hot Shot's think the noise is cool and use the Jake Brake instead of the tractor brakes. I hear them all the time running thru the gears with the Jake on. Kind of stupid. The noise is pretty loud. I used to drive trucks and only used the Jake in the mountains for what it was intended for. I also used to ride Harleys and worked for a Harley shop for years. Can't stand straight pipes either. I guess I don't need the whole world to look at me.

on the street i live on we have few neighbors that drive trucks and they are very good when it comes to driving thru, they drive at low speeds and high gears so they are not loud,i drive truck with straight pipes and always have respect for neighborhoods.but before the other night some idiot drove thru our street and i could hear him from far away using engine brake at 2:00 am and woke up half of neighborhood as some of my neighbors complained the next day.also woke up my 2 and 3 year olds.i felt like chasing the guy down and hanging his *** in those pipes.and if they continue to do such thing neighbors are going to start to complain and thay are not going to alow trucks to go thru residental streets and all theese truck drivers that park theirs rigs in there driveways wont be alowed to park there.I personaly think it is just retarded

you must have been a company driver not an o/o ,I use my jake most of the time saves alot of money on brakes I had str8 pipes on my 92 binder with a series 60 in it and it was LOUD to loud I took them off and put a new set of mufflers on it but have thought about putting the pipes back on with taller stacks so that it is not as loud in the cab

I am with you on this , an engine brake was designed to slow down the vehicle, I almost never have to use my service brakes when driving, I plan my stops ahead of time and slow down over a long distance. I'm a company driver, but it's a private company, the more money i can help save my boss, the bigger my next raise might be. We only haul our own stuff, and the less time my truck spends in the shop getting repairs, the less time i have to spend driving our shitty backup truck

Maybe in your area, but not everywhere.
