Blown Intercooler Boot: What Color?
If you blow an intercooler boot while running down the track at full fuel...
Do you get a ton of black smoke or a ton of white smoke?
Do you get a ton of black smoke or a ton of white smoke?
Should be just lots of black

White smoke usually occurs when there is not enough temperature to burn the fuel. The unburned fuel particles are then exhausted usually by a rich fuel smell. In cold weather it is not uncommon to get white smoke until engine temperature builds up. One cause of white smoke on engine start up could be faulty grid heater. Low engine cranking speed can also create an excessive amount of white smoke.
If the problem persists after the engine is up to operating temperature several other things should be checked. A faulty injector can cause white smoke. Timing is often a factor when white smoke is excessive. Low engine compression can cause the problem and the injection pump can also have problems that result in white smoke. Air in the fuel system can also result in white smoke.

I would naturally think that it would smoke black, but our school's massively overhyped Bullydog-advertersing expense "BOOMED" and started putting out tons of white smoke on the way down the track the other day. It's an 8.3 with stock head and headgasket, propane and water/methanol; I didn't see it, but I figured that it was a blown head gasket from hearing about it.
But now I'm told that it was a blown intercooler boot. I wouldn't think that a blown boot would cause white smoke, but if you go from 40 PSI to 0 PSI of boost it's gotta drop cylinder temps a whole lot.
Ever hear a headgasket go "boom" when it went out?
