Default Two Part Air Filters- "Safety Elements"?

I went to the semi graveyard looking for a way to mount an air filter with a 5" inner diameter.

I find a 2007 Hino air box with a hole a little over 5", and it has two filter numbers on it.

It lists two numbers for an "Air Cleaner": Hino # 17720-6401A, Donaldson # EPG110346. Then it lists two numbers for a "Primary Filter": Hino # 17801-3440A, Donaldson # P185067.

Here's what I find: the "Primary" filter is actually the outer filter, and the "Air Cleaner" is the inner filter.

Donaldson lists the outer air filter as an "Air Primary", and the inner filter as a "Safety Element".

The question: Does anybody know what a "Safety Element" is?

Is a "Safety Element" an optional piece that provides filtratration above-and-beyond what the "Primary" does, or is it more-or-less required? Can I run with only the "primary" element?

I kind of like the idea of running with both filters most of the time and pulling out the inner filter at the track.

nice find dude.

my guess is that the outer element is like a 20 micron or something and then the inner is for 10 micron maybe

Donaldson can tell you micron ratings on these it should be in their books
