Born out of a partnership between Cummins and Chrysler, with research funding from the Department of Energy, the ISV5.0 has been in development for more than a decade. Originally designed as a pickup engine and intended for the Ram 1500, the project was shelved when the automotive industry nearly collapsed in 2008. Thankfully, Cummins has found a new OEM partner in Nissan and resurrected the dormant engine in a big way. In addition to the pickup version of the engine, Cummins has developed a commercial version of its 5.0L V-8, named the ISV5.0. This powerplant is being marketed in the commercial world as a replacement for V-8 and V-10 gasoline engines, along with supplanting less efficient diesel mills, in everything from delivery trucks to motorhomes.
