For decades, size meant everything when it came to engines – bigger was better and there was no replacement for displacement. But volatile gasoline prices and growing consumer interest in clean technologies are turning that notion on its head.

This is like calling the Toyota Matrix a totally new kind of car when it was introduced. It was a station wagon like we've had forever, and we've had small engines forever. Ooh, they've turbocharged it, so what, remember the GNX? Smaller engine with a turbo to improve performance. Nothing new under the sun.
