In general or are you specifically wanting to know more about 6.4L Powerstrokes?

An 08 powerstroke will ONLY get good mileage with a DPF delete and tuning. If you don't want to tune, then look for an older truck. The 6.4's stock are horrible on mileage. Once tuned/deleted they can net near 20 and sometimes a touch over, depending on driving obviously.

i would go with an 03-07 6.0 if your not doing any mods you shouldnt have any problems with head studs or anything, mine has a cold air intake and i get roughly 15-17 in town and 20-22 on highway, but thats just me.

ya but from my understandings that adds lil power so you wont need to worry bout headstuds or anything, but i wouldnt look at a 6.4 a friend of mine has one and hes had to dump alot of money into it.

You're right, that is just you. I get about 15 avg, and never more than 16, and I have a supercab shortbed. The only 6.0 I've seen get 20+ is 2x4 rc/lb. Either you're not calculating correctly or your truck is a freak, that mileage is NOT common in a 6.0.

If that's the only mods you want to do, then a 7.3 would be best bet for mileage. Anything older really, the newer you go, the more emissions crap is on them, so mileage typically suffers.

A new 6.7 would get decent mileage though, but $55k for a few more MPG seems like a tough pill to swallow, but if you got the $ go for it. A tuned/deleted 6.4 is one of the best all around, but if you wont tune, it's not really an option.

Show me any diesel motor and I'll show you someone who has had problems and had to dump a ton of money. Hard to blame one specific case on a truck. A 6.4 will be more reliable than a 6.0... no questions asked.
