All you need to know about the 6.4 is (1) You must drain the water out of the fuel every month (2) Change the oil every 5,000 miles (3) Change the two fuel-filters before 15,000 miles. If you follow these simple rules, you'll 6.4 will last

All diesel engine need the water removed, in the 6.4 it's right on the frame under the driver seat, you open this plastic valve & the water will run out by itself, after 25 seconds, you close the valve & wait to do it again next month

The 6.4 is just an improved 6.0. They share the same heads, but they use larger head bolts. The EGR system is vastly improved, the turbo's are better (compound over single on the 6.0), mucho better fuel system (common rail over HUEI), and just a nice truck inside and out.

I'd love to get in one myself, waiting for the vegistroke to come out for it first. I'd love one with a big tune, a single turbo setup/wastegate, and have a reliable daily driven 550-600 rwhp truck!!!

If you're getting an earlier 08, make sure all the updates are done. The job 1 trucks had radiator issues, but Ford fixed it pretty quick, and they also had some real early job 1's that needed injectors replaced, again Ford took care of it, but something you want to check on.

Working on one is more costly and time consuming, the cab really has to come off of it for almost anything. Technically you CAN do most with cab on, but it's a huge PITA. Ford will yank the cab for turbo or injection pump or anything along those lines.

Other than that, the running gear is solid and you're getting one of the best trans in a diesel on the road now.

What are your plans/expectations for this truck? Are you going to mod it? Are you going to tow or grocery getter or hotrod or what?

My 6.4 is completly stock. The truck has way more motor than I'll ever use. I can pull my 10K trailer and toys just fine in mountains of Utah.

I drain the water seperator every month (it takes all of 30 seconds), change the oil every 5,000 miles, and the fuel filters every 10,000 miles.

On average I get around 13.8 to 14 mpg's per tank (mix of city/hwy). Highway alone at 70 mpg I get 18 mpg's. Towing I get between 9 to 10 mpg's (there's alot of mountain roads where I live).

Don't know why the 6.4L got a reputation but look at the threads. There's very few problems with the 6.4L and alot of problems are on modifed trucks. No truck or motor is bullet proof.

The problems that people were crying about the 6.4 was because they weren't doing the above mention service. The early radiators had some issues, but other wise

I can't vouche for anybody else's truck. I consistently get the mileage I described in the thread above. I try and keep the turbo pressure below 200 psi under normal driving.

If I were to pin it through intersections and haul a$$ everywhere, then I can see people getting 11 mpg's.

All I know is I follow the driving recommendations in the engine guide book and I get decent mileage stock.

Your truck is 1 of a kind, the 6.4 have absolutely horrific mileage stock. Once the DPF is gone and they're tuned, they're much better.

I know people getting 11mpg no matter what in their 6.4's.

You better hold on to yours, cause it's the only one like it!!!

ALSO* I'm SURE you're not reading off the lie-o-meter, and you're hand calculating all of this right?
