must be nice lookin to sell/trade my hoist in no way it will lift my diesels

Trial and error always worked for me. Put the feet where you think they should be, lift the truck till it's just touching ground, give it a shake, if it's stable take it up, if not set down and hit it again.

I use one of these to take the rock out of the truck. Gets a little scary when the truck rocks.
