Altenator Question

I have a 2006 F250 XLT 6.0 Diesel and the altenator is out.........Can anyone tell me if it is ok to put in a higher output (amp) altenator on it, if so, what would be recommended? It is a single altenator system.. Any help is greatly appreciated..
