Default turn key, and screech??

so, i went to start my pickup this afternoon after it was running already today, and i turned the key, waited for the glow plug light to kick off, turned it to start it and it screeched. turned it off, and then it started back up. about and hour later it did the same thing. would anyone know why? i cant figure it out

On my 97 my starter would screech and scream and hardly even start my truck at times. Then other times would start fine.

Check and make sure the starter bolts are tight. Reach under the truck and see if you can wiggle the starter.

Mine did the same thing and it was just loose. Especially the upper bolt, which is hard to reach.

I'm gonna agree with the loose starter. The sound you are hearing sounds like the grinding of gears. You can duplicate this by trying to "start" the truck while it is running. Although I dont recommend it. So my guess is the gears are not lining up.
