best place to install a EGT probe
hey guys i have a quick question i bought the edge evolution programmer and im debating on where to mount the probe? the book says manifold but i dont like the idea of dropping metal shaving into manifold, i was thinking about mounting it to the down pipe but the exhaust walls are so thin i dont think the probe will have but about 1 1/2 to 2 threads to screw into? any suggestions would help thanks for read

don't do it with the engine running... if the bit breaks it will go thru the turbo. on the drivers side, right before it goes to the uppipe, there is a flat ish spot. if you put it in the DP, it can be off 300* +/-. do you want to know if you're at 700*, 1000* or 1300*?

Pre turbo is always better then post turbo...
To install a EGT gauge
Drill...
Tap...
Install...
Drive.
Dont worry about the shavings, unless you live somewhere that they have turned off gravity to save money. 99% of the shavings will fall in your shirt, eyes, nose, armpits and ears... Any shavings that do happen to defy gravity and fall UP will blow past the exhaust side of the turbo without issue. Its a turbo, it is designed to see 2000* temps for long periods of time without harm, a few small pieces of soft cast iron going by will not hurt a thing.
Drill... Tap... Install.
Done.

I highly doubt that the exhaust gas has enough force to push a broken drill bit UP the up-pipes and into the turbo.... unless the motor was turning 6K+ rpm it *might* have enough velocity then.... but then again I wouldn't be drilling a manifold if the motor was turning that many RPM especially a 7.3....
Best 7.3 spots are the very bottom of the manifold, either side, right before the chamfer for the up pipe. Since at the very bottom, all the filings stay put.
What I've learned from years of "learning experiences":
1. DONT PREDRILL!!! little bits break way too easy and are so much fun to get out of turbos and the hole allows more filings to get through
2. DONT GREASE THE BIT!!! Guys say "Use grease it'll trap the fillings" Sure does, In the manifold as the bit goes through that is. Drill dry and dont push. Smaller the filings the better plus less chance to break bits or throw big chunks in.
3. Use a small magnet to pull all the filings out. Work fast or else the cast starts to hold polarization and hold the filings in place.
4. DONT GREASE THE TAP! same as the bit, it will pile up filings inside that are stuck in place so you cant pull them out with the magnet. I use penitrating oil since it isn't sticky yet still lubes the tap.
5. More magnet! Cant be too thorough here
