Default 4r100 troubles...

well my overdrive light started blinking so I took it to a highly recommended shop and they told me that 2nd gear should be going out shortly... he said that the 01 models they went to a new Part and it didn't work so they went back to the old part... (not sure what the part was).

They told me they needed to rebuild the tranny to fix the problem and gave me two options... factory rebuild for $2600 or a heavy duty rebuild that will last no matter what tunes or power upgrades I do for $4500...

I just need to know what people on here have to say about this?

7.3l pretty much stock (240hp/453flb tq on the dyno).

well the O/D light blinking isn't always a sign of the tranny going out. is it shifting really hard or is it relatively smooth? the prices the shop gave you sound pretty high. i had a heavy duty rebuild done on a E4OD for around $2,600. i can't see the 4R100 being to much higher. look at other posts on this site, there are several with a similar problem. check the connection to the VSS.

also, have it scanned for codes.

they did scan it for codes... and the 1-2 shift was the code causing the o/d to blink...
it use to shift really smooth... now its starting to not shift at all... the engine goes up to redline and then just sit there... if I let off the gas it will shift sometimes....

i had an 01 f250 a year ago. had same problem. it got rebuilt at 180k. at 190k the 2nd gear sprag (i think that s right) broke. wouldn t shift from 1st to 2nd. trans shop made good on it. then the shifting problem you are talking about started. took it back to trans shop they said the valve body has aluminum and steel parts in it that were sticking together. they took it out and cleaned it and it worked fine for about 50k then started acting up again. never had it looked at again. an icy patch and pine tree helped me get a 99 f350 with a 6spd.

Just don't pay them 4500 for an unbreakable transmission. For that kind of money you can get a BTS...
