Default questions about exhaust and programmers

I know there are sections about exhaust for these trucks and tuners, but to me its very overwhelming considering I'm very familiar with gas vehicles and there are different companies. I have some questions. First is there any exhaust company that is better than the other or is there a good company that you can get quality stuff yet won't break the bank. Another question is are stacks or a single stack better than a regular lets say 4 or 5 inch exhaust with a straight pipe? My last question is about programmers/ chips for a 2000 ford 7.3 powerstroke that is automatic. I've read that edge isn't that good, but they seem to be the cheaper ones. I've read that people have a 6 position chip or something like that that you just use a **** to change it. Is something like that better than getting one you have to plug in to change to a different stage? Basically I'm just curious on the different types and what not. In case you were wondering yes I am new to diesels.

Exhaust is Exhaust... Pick your price range and go, they are all going to flow the same. 4" turbo back is all you need. 5" just sounds differnet but no change in performance.

Stacks, standard or what ever will all be the same... Get what you like...

Performance...

Get some gauges FIRST!!! Pyro, Tranny and Boost...

Then you can safely add a TS style 6 pos chip to add some power.

Edge, SCT and such do, but I am not a big fan because if you ever go more then stock injectors you are more or less buying a chip anyway. They (for the most part) can not be custom tuned and are better off being used in the newer trucks like the 6.0, 6.4 and 6.7...

Well I don't plan on doing much to it, at least at this time in the near future. Just exhaust, air intake, and some type of programmer.

those are good starter mods. i got intake, exhaust, and a TS 6 position from KT performance. i really like the chip. it really woke it up. but definitly guages. and with stock injectors, fuel, turbo. you won't get the complete HP like what the tune says. with my 100 HP tune i'm probably getting about 70- 80 HP or so. these mods should increase your mileage. it just depends on the truck.

and a programmer plugs into your OBDII port under the dash. which you have to stop and reprogram. a chip plugs directly into the PCM. and you can get a 4 pos, 6 pos, i think dp has a 16 or something stupid like that. with the chip you CAN change settings on the fly.

Have you dyno'd it or run it down the 1/4 mile? Aftermarket tuning companies usually don't just pick numbers out of thin air.

Granted, anything above about 100-110 HP gain is icing on the cake with stock injectors, but you should easily be in the 100 additional RWHP range with anyone's 100 HP calibration....unless your HPOP cannot supply the necessary pressure to empty the injector in the time given.

i stand corrected. i thought i read somewhere in this forum that you wouldn't get the full HP number.... but i haven't had it on a dyno or put a gauge on my HPOP

Superduties are a bit closer to those numbers because they have larger stock injectors however you won't see a 140hp increase on stock injectors...

maybe that's what i was thinking. the highest tune i have is 100. i just didn't really see the point in anything more with a almost stock engine.
