my buddy has a 2000 7.3 with a cold air intake, chip, and exhaust and his turbo surges alot when he gets on it and was wandering if anyone knew what the cause of that would be? its a stock turbo

 

I had the same problem, I may not be exact on the understanding, but basically the stock turbo is unable to keep up with the mods (chip, exhaust and intake) that have been done. The stock turbo is limited to what it can handle.

I replaced my turbo with a Garrett 38R, its drop in replacement and I don't have the surge anymore. I also have similar mods to my truck as your buddy.

 

so do it and some don't, get a ported housing and you're done

 

You can use an anti-surge wheel that come on the 94.5-Early 99 or you can go with the Ported housing from ATS or USA.
