Default strange start

ok so ive had this happen a few times. ill go start start my truck and it cranks over fast starts to fire then slows down. I have to turn it over a few more times then it'll start like normal just a white puff then its good. Only has happened when its not plugged in but ive not plugged it in in colder weather and its fine batteries maybe? and its did it twice in the last 4 days. are they maybe just getting tired?

I would check the batteries and starter wiring. Sounds like possibly the starter is getting old. Mine would crank what I thought was fairly fast, sputter, try to catch, keep cranking sputter catch, start and romp and then I'd be fine... New starter solved that.

If the truck isn't running then yes.

I wouldn't rule out the new starter. I replaced mine in less than 2 weeks it started to acting up. Turns out I had a bad cable that I didn't catch and the low voltage/amps was enough to knock its guts out.

I wouldn't rule out batteries either. This weekend mine did the slow start and sputter thing. Batteries were showing 13.8 volts and when I took them in for testing both were toast. Replaced and now it starts just fine. Batteries may not be your problem but its an easy check.
