it was 10 this morning truck was plugged in i had to turn the key on let the pugs warm up then i turned it off for a second did it again and it kinda started with almost like a wicked lope sound to it and died after running for 10 or so seconds then i shut it off turned the key on waited for the light to go off again i have a lope sound to it and it died one more time so i heated the glow plugs back up and it started with really low idle and rmps were jumping and then it leved it self out to normal and it was ok again i let it heat up for 10 min or so just idle i shut it off and it did it one more time with just rpms jumping around a lil bit and then it kicked back into hi idle this is my first diesel so this all seems a little weird to me it this normal or is something jacked up

I'd say that's not normal if the truck was plugged in... Should have started fine plugged in. I wonder if the block heater is working?

Also, FYI, the Wait to start light is a dummy light. Just turn your key to ON and it will warm the glow plugs for up to 2 minutes depending on EOT and baro. So no need to keep cycling it with the light.

Sounds right to me. My '01 sounds like that in VERY COLD weather. Remember this about the blockheater. It only heats the oil and water at the heat exchanger, not the air intake. #1 Unplug the blockheater. Check 110 volts at plug end. Next ohm the blockheater. #2 Plug in the heater. Wait about 20 or 30 minutes. Check the heat exchanger by hand. Be careful, it may be HOT. Do this when the motor is cold. You will get your answer.

 

Hmmm. Maybe its just me then. In 10* with mine plugged in, the truck starts great and doesn't kill itself 3 times... I could leave it unplugged and would expect it to start and run rough for for a minute, but it still wouldn't kill itself 3 times...

 

95powersmoker, your right about not stoppig. I should have paid attention to the question.

 

my work truck pluged in will die a few times, we have tried everything to get it to start better. it has new heaters, new glow plugs, relays intake temp sensor etc. and only has 130k. runs good once its started though so we just have come to the reality that its just cold blooded.

it was 19 today and kicked over first time i dont know maybe it just had a bad day yesterday but ill keep you posted if anything else happens thanks again

 

sound like it needs to be broke in mine is coming up on 300,000 and starts the first time and never dies when its been pluged in even in -20 weather.
