99 F350 Boost question

I installed a boost gauge on my truck. I hooked it up between the map sensor hose and intercooler housing. The gauge only reads 2psi when the truck is running at 3000 rpm. Can someone tell me what the boost gauge should read and what I need to check for

95powersmoker 02-03-2011 10:02 PM

3000rpm? Is that sitting still?

Team01 02-03-2011 10:03 PM

yes that is sitting still. At a idle the gauge reads 0

95powersmoker 02-03-2011 10:06 PM

Drive it and report back.

Team01 02-04-2011 03:46 PM

I drove the truck to work this morning. the gauge would read 3 psi driving at 60 mpr. Also the gauge that I installed is a vacuum / boost gauge if that makes a difference. Please let me know.

95powersmoker 02-04-2011 03:51 PM

That sound right for just cruising. What about at WOT?

Team01 02-04-2011 03:53 PM

What is wot?

skinnysfd 02-04-2011 03:55 PM

wide open throttle

Team01 02-04-2011 04:19 PM

When I step on the throttle the gauge will go up to about 10 psi

That is low...

Team01 02-04-2011 04:25 PM

So if that is to low . What do i need to do to get it were it should be

95powersmoker 02-04-2011 04:31 PM

If that was foot to the floor...You have a boost leak, you need to find where that is. Could be in the intake plenums... could be in the intercooler system...Could be a dusted turbo...

Team01 02-04-2011 04:34 PM

I noticed that I have an exhaust leak on the drivers side on the down pipe. Would that be the problem. because when I tow a 35' LQ horse trailer I have very little power going up hill and the turbo does not kick in.

95powersmoker 02-04-2011 04:39 PM

If your leak is after the turbo in the downpipe, that won't make a difference... What kind of intake do you have? When you say turbo does not kick in going uphill...Does that mean no boost or what?

Team01 02-04-2011 04:44 PM

The intake is stock. On the turbo there is just power. Before when I would go up hill with the trailer you could hear the turbo kick in Now there is nothing. The exhaust leak is at the top by the turbo

95powersmoker 02-04-2011 04:48 PM

Take the intake boot off the drivers side of the turbo and inspect the compressor wheel. Are the edges sharp or does it look like something threw rocks towards it while it was spinning at 20000rpm? Also, move the shaft side to side and in and out...Is there any play in the shaft. Some side to side is OK...In and out is a bad thing...

Team01 02-06-2011 10:35 AM

I checked the turbo for any play there is very let play side to side no in - out play the turbo wheel has no marks on it and is very clean. all the intercooler boots have been checked and I replaced two of them about a moth ago. I was told that if there was an exhaust leak that would cause the turbo not to work the way it should . Please help me to fine the problem.

riddick01 02-06-2011 01:12 PM

check on the y pipe for any soot build up. another thing worth trying is (if the truck can blow black smoke) pop the hood and have someone else hit the throttle while u look for any smoke coming out.

Team01 02-06-2011 05:12 PM

Ok just checked the y pipe for soot build up. The firewall showed very little soot. I did find that the clamp that connects the exhaust to the turbo was loose and one of the clamps for the intercooler boot on top of the engine was loose. Is there any thing else i should look for.

Lange503 02-07-2011 03:57 PM

check all your intercooler boots and clamps, and intake manifold boots and clamps, make sure they are all tight and that there isn't any tears in the boots, and also check that V-band clamp on the turbo, its the one thats on the left side that connects it to the up pipes and manifolds

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

and also that o-ring thats on your intake manifold, my manifold cracked where it connects to the turbo and was causing a boost leak, so do all that then check back with us and let know what you did or did not find :tu:

Team01 02-07-2011 05:31 PM

Checked all intercooler boots the are fine not tears or cracks in the boots. All the clamps are tight. Did fine the V band clamp on the turbo a little loose. Still runs the same . Any other things i can check.

Lange503 02-08-2011 10:53 AM

there are some bolts (5 or 6 if i remember right??) on your compressor housing, get ya an extension and a wobbly and see if those are loose, you kinda got a tough one here bud

Team01 02-08-2011 08:31 PM

Checked the bolts onthe compressor housing they are all tight. What else can i do to get more power.

Lange503 02-09-2011 01:49 PM

custom tuned chip from PHP (Power Hungry Performance) and a cold air, exhaust, injectors, aftermarket turbo set up, depends on how much money you want to throw at it lol

Where are you located at? Might have someone in your area that could come over and take a look.

Team01 02-09-2011 05:45 PM

Ok here is a new thing on my truck. I getting a code 1247 turbo boost low pressure. What can I do to find and fix this.

F350CCFX4 02-09-2011 06:04 PM

Again, where are you located?

Cummins123 02-09-2011 06:05 PM

boost leak

Team01 02-09-2011 11:19 PM

I live in salinas, Ca. If it is a boost leak. were do i start to find the problem leak

F350CCFX4 02-10-2011 06:04 AM

Go to your local store and get a fogging machine. They are about $20. Tie it in where you put your boost gauge. Let it pressurize the system and start checking for fog throughout the system.

Team01 02-10-2011 05:22 PM

wrere would be the best place to buy a fogger machine

F350CCFX4 02-10-2011 05:46 PM

Google would be your best bet if you cant find one locally. Any costume or even walmart sells them during the fall for halloween.
Cheers!

Team01 02-14-2011 04:31 PM

Ok I bought a fogger. I need to know if I should block off the air filter port or shpuld I leave it like it is. Please let me know were I'm to hook it up at.

F350CCFX4 02-14-2011 05:13 PM

That is completely up to you. I would try and fog through the boost gauge port you have, but this part is going to be up to you. :humm:

Kyle_KleinSS 02-14-2011 09:52 PM

If there is soot you have an up pipe leak, its not sending all the exhaust to the turbo to spool it hence lower boost. Might be time to redo the donut gaskets

Team01 03-03-2011 10:52 PM

Ok Guys I still have the same problem no power. Need help please

Return the fog machine... What the hell is that going to show...:argh:

Pick up this tool

Boost leak tool
Hook it up and with some soapy water spray all your boot connections, from the turbo, to the motor.

If you have any leaks you will see bubbles coming from the area.

If you dont have any boost leaks you could have up pipe leaks, which you say you have checked.

Look at this picture...

http://inlinethumb07.webshots.com/41...600x600Q85.jpg

Keep in mind the turbo is removed in this picture.

You dont want to see what the red arrow is showing. You can also have leaks from what is called the "babys butt" part with the blue arrow. This is very hard to see, but if someone has pulled the turbo and not paid atten they can not get this seated properly and it will leak there as well.

You just have to start checking everything over very slowing and one thing at a time. What kind of boost gauge do you have? Brand?

Team01 03-06-2011 09:52 PM

The boost gauge that I have is a LED Vacuum gauge with boost. The brand is Nitrous model 98478 bought it from Harbor Frieght. Should I get a different type of gauge? Please let me know.

95powersmoker 03-06-2011 10:51 PM

Where is it tapped?

Team01 03-07-2011 04:51 PM

I hooked up the gauge between the map sensor and the intercooler housing that the turbo is connected to. Should it be at a different place.
